The Queen's Champion

At the time of the Norman conquest the King's Champion was Sir Robert Marmion who was granted a great deal of land throughout England, including land in Gloucestershire. Eventually a descendant of Robert married Sir John Dymoke of Gloucestershire who inherited the title of King's Champion in 1377. From that day to this a member of the Dymoke family has been Champion to the monarch.
